Problem Solving the Toyota Way: “An E-coat Scenario”

The main course objective is to visualize a basic form of a 5 to 8 step problem-solving scenario. This lesson starts by discussing some basic Japanese terms used in Manufacturing, such as but not limited to: Gemba, Genchi Genbtsu, and Kaizen.

Mr. Lozoya will share his experience as a Toyota Manufacturing supervisor (Paint Department) and some key lessons learned in the area of Problem Solving. This class is not specifically an E-COAT class. It is a Problem Solving class while using E-COAT as a setting for the a scenario.

The Problem Solving process will explore areas such as:

  1. Identifying the Problem
  2. Breaking Down the Problem
  3. Point of Occurrence
  4. Root Cause Analysis
  5. Selection Matrix & Activity to mitigate the problem

At the end of the session, the attendee should have a basic understanding of how to Problem Solve almost any scenario in the manufacturing community.

Instructor: Mario Lozoya

Mario Lozoya was born in Rio Bravo, Mexico and raised in McAllen Texas. Mario is the former Director of Government Relations & External Aairs, Toyota Motor North America and was based in San Antonio, TX. Prior to that, he was a manufacturing supervisor for the same company. (2005-2018 total). One of his many experiences working with Toyota Motor Manufacturing was to manage the Paint Department’s PTED Line (Phosphate Treatment & Electro Deposition) for the Tundra and Tacoma plant in San Antonio Texas.

In his current role, Mario is responsible for creating Economic Prosperity in Brownsville, TX, through Economic Development strategies to include Education and Workforce Development. Mario has testified in front of the Texas House and Senate on issues related to Education and Workforce Development and has been instrumental in changes to state policy related to this subject. He also works very closely with DOE, DOL, and members of congresses on issues related to Education and Workforce Development. Mario was instrumental in establishing the 23 on site supplier companies for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas in San Antonio, at the time one of the largest Economic Development projects in the State of Texas.

Mario has earned 3 awards, recognizing his efforts and creating Education and Workforce Strategies: 2013 Texas Workforce Commission · 2014 White House Initiative on Education Excellence for Hispanics · 2019 Texas Economic Development Council.

Mario joined the GBIC team in Brownsville in August of 2018.
